Chapter 12

Great Expectations

2193 BCE

The constant background drone of the living mass of people in Knossos was hard for those from the perpetually quiet countryside to appreciate.

Paras had arrived only the day before with his wife to pay homage at the shrine of Selene. He believed in the Earth Mother. He saw her almost every night. Even through the cloudy skies, he could pick out her light behind the mists that would have him miss her blessings. Even on those nights when she could not be seen, having transformed herself from a pregnant whole to a sliver of her former self, he would still enter the night with his arms upheld in supplication and meditate with his eyes closed imagining her there in all her resplendent fullness until his arms fatigued and dropped. He had developed strong shoulders almost solely from this nightly exercise.

Paras was a scribe. His vocation kept him busy recording every kind of business transaction and negotiation. It was no way to get rich, not like the merchandise traders and traffickers, but it kept his family well fed and healthy. He loved the news that his clients brought with them of Egypt and Libya, the ports to the south. Egypt had been having trouble with bands of raiders randomly pillaging their personal property and water, cowards who would not stay to fight but would flee after netting their gains. They had proven themselves unstoppable despite the efforts of the most capable people. The stories of these land pirates were so interesting to him with his love of history. They reminded him of the tales of yore when trade was developing in the Mediterranean and Kriti's ships were occasionally attacked. But in spite of the pirates and their harassing uncertainties the water routes from Europe and Africa to Asia, through Kypros, Sidon, and Tyre, or through the Aegean and the Black Sea, became cheaper than the long and arduous land routes that had carried so much of the commerce of Egypt and the Near East. With their ships that were so much larger and faster and more easily handled than any that had previously sailed the Mediterranean, trade took new lines and created new wealth. Kriti was blossoming like the watered rose. In Egypt, a high foundation had been struck along the entire length of land from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, the same route that would be followed later by the Suez Canal. Slowly the wall was being built up to allay the threat of roving bandits. It was halfway complete and with the skills at massive construction projects to which the Egyptian were renowned the project should be finished within thirty years. Contemplations of a waterway to join the Red Sea with the Nile were also being considered by the engineers although as yet no one could imagine how such a feat might be accomplished.
